We are Fred and Jemma. We set up Guisborough Eco Group because we recognised the need to bring residents, businesses and organisations together to form a community voice.

Often, important things are overlooked, side-lined and forgotten. The group’s aim is to build a voice for the community and get things done. Add your voice!
The Group’s aim is to build a ‘voice’ for the community. It is a place to share ideas and in the first three months we have discussed a whole range of topics and found people’s special interests. They include EV charging, solar panels, a share scheme, composting, planting trees and bushes, recycling and actions to reduce climate change. If you want to hear others’ ideas or have some of your own and interested in developing projects to get things done you are welcome.
We have had fascinating talks by guest speakers. One talked about bees. His knowledge is amazing. He became interested in them when he was young and now keeps them. Another guest, Louise Westbury, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council Lead member for Environment and Climate Change described her job as taking on other people’s jobs, reducing the climate change potential, then handing them back. She has been responsible for changing street lighting, adding solar panels and heat pumps to council buildings.
Louise also has an interest in planting trees and bushes, and recycling.
Fred is very interested in recycling, how it works and sometimes doesn’t, and why recycling is sometimes burned. Louise explained that contaminated recycling can’t be recycled and gave an example. Recycling can be contaminated when someone tips paint into their recycling bin. When that contaminated recycling is then loaded into the Recycling Collection Vehicle it contaminates everything it touches. All of the recycling may be burned. Sadly burning creates the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, which adds to climate change that affects everyone!
If you would like to find out more about climate change, greenhouse gasses and recycling you must read Fred’s novel, Recycle Angel. Written for children and adults who enjoy reading and learning it is a story about Grandad and his grandson Freddy. Grandad does not understand recycling but he and Freddy set out to learn. Outgoing, cheeky, happy to knuckle down and work hard, Grandad soon learns and starts the business, Recycle Angel, Freddy runs it. You can read the book, on Kindle or buy it from him or some local book shops. He hopes you find it fun to read - and informative.

Facebook is our primary, regular, communication and feedback medium. On this website there will be space for group conversations, focus group projects, feedback and more.
The group is at the beginning of a long journey. Fred believes that the majority need a roof over their heads, a good supply of water, food, energy and fun. Aim high - reduce council tax hikes, carbon emissions, climate change and make improvements in our area.
The group, which is open to all, meets on the first Monday of each month. With no formal structure, meetings are inclusive. Everyone is invited to get involved, discuss issues, build projects, and get action. There is a huge variety of activities and initiatives that we can do to effect change.
We meet at 4pm on the first or second Monday of the month in Guisborough Library
